Swing Door elevators in Los Angeles must comply with the Los Angeles Municipal Code (LAMC) and ASME A17.1 Elevator Safety Code.

These requirements align with nationally recognized safety practices for elevator door construction, interlocks, and operation, ensuring both usability and protection for passengers.

Every Swing Door Elevator must have a door or gate at each car entrance. These barriers serve as essential safety elements to prevent access to the hoistway and must fully cover the opening when closed.

What This Means For You:

All Swing Door Elevators that fall within the LAMC must have safe, secure doors or gates at every car entrance that:

  • Fully cover the elevator opening,
  • Are fitted with safety interlocks that prevent movement unless closed,
  • Are designed so users can enter and exit comfortably and safely, and
  • Meet both city and state safety standards.
